The residue film – the unsightly surface film on the water surface of every aquarium – is the place where organic substances such as fats, proteins and decomposition products deposit which form the breeding ground for a large number of undesirable microorganisms. The surface is however also decisively important for the vital exchange of oxygen between water and air. On the one hand, a film on the water surface reduces the diffusion rate; on the other hand the biological processes taking place there consume additional oxygen. In addition the entry of light through the surface of the water is impaired, which is disadvantageous for good plant growth.
The EHEIM surface skimmer provides for a clear water surface by removing the residue film continuously and bringing new water layers to the surface.
Its decisive advantages:
- Prevents surface film.
Prevents undesirable biological processes on the water surface. Hence optimum exchange of oxygen.
Therefore light enters unimpeded for better plant growth.
- Mobile inlet float with a level compensation of approx. 2 cm, which adapts to the height of the water surface.
- Automatic valve control of the lower priming area, for example when the inlet float is plugged.
- Constant water inlet, reliably without suction of air
- Surface removal stop function, e.g. for feeding.
- Telescopic design for universal aquarium sizes.
The skimmer can be connected to any external canister filter instead of the priming pipe. A T-reducer is necessary as a connection piece for larger EHEIM filters.

B - Installation
Place the skimmer in the aquarium in such a way that the intake float lies on the surface of the water at an angle of approx. 45°. Pull up float valve approx. 1 cm to begin skimming. Connect the skimmer to the suction side of filter with hose.
C - In the case of filters 2215/17, 2226/28, 2250, 2260, 2315/17 and 2326/28, a T-reducing piece is necessary, so that a by-pass is created (see illustration).
If the output flow of the filter is too high, a rattling of the valve may occur. In this case too it is advisable to install a bypass (see ill. C).
D - Attention
The direction of flow must be towards the skimmer, i.e. surface skimmer must be positioned on the opposite side of the aquarium to the spray bar.
E - To shut off the intake float push float valve down. (feeding etc.) In the case of young or small fish, only use the skimmer for short periods. 10 minutes a day is sufficient.
Temporary foaming in the inlet pipe does not reduce the efficiency of the skimmer or the filter.
A distance spacer is available for bridging large aquarium frames (order no. 4004560).
